Instruments

At the Center for Technology at National Jewish Medical and Research center, we are well-equipped with a variety of instruments and software platforms that allow us to give students practical training in proteomics, metabolomics, genomics, and bioinformatics.

LC/MS/MS- Ion Trap

6340 Trap Mass Spec
Agilent 6340 XCT Ultra ion trap mass spectrometer, with both CID and ETD fragmentation capabilities. This system includes Agilent series 1200 HPLC modules and Agilent HPLC Chip interface.

Applications: Proteomics and Metabolomics. This ion trap mass spectrometer is used primarily for high sensitivity protein identification studies. The novel ETD fragmentation capability enables the identification of phosphorylated residues and excellent amino acid sequence coverage. When coupled with off-line fractionation, the instrument is used for complex sample analysis, such as discovery-based proteomics and quantitative proteomics using isotope tagging techniques. This instrument is also used for metabolite identification studies when fragmentation of the metabolite is required.


6340 Trap Mass Spec
Agilent 6210 Time-of-Flight LC/MS with optional ESI and Multimode (ESI/APCI) sources. Our ESI-TOF is used primarily for small molecule profiling.

Applications: This instrument offers high mass accuracy (<2 ppm) which can be useful for small molecule analysis and peptide mass mapping experiments. The multimode source is utilized in metabolite profiling experiments to ensure ionization of a variety of small molecule classes.

LC/MS/MS - QTOF

6510 Quadrupole Time-of-Flight LC/MS
Agilent 6510 Quadrupole Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometer. This system includes Agilent series 1200 HPLC modules and HPLC Chip interface.

Applications:Proteomics andMetabolomics.. The QTOF mass spectrometer is used for a number of studies, including protein identification, post-translational modification analysis, quantitative proteomics, discovery-based proteomics, and metabolite profiling. When coupled with off-line fractionation the instrument offers a powerful means of conducting large scale protein profiling studies. It differs from the ion trap primarily in that it offers a higher mass accuracy and lower mass range.

DNA Microarray Scanner

Microarray Scanner
A recent addition to the lab, the DNA microarray scanner is used for a variety of genomics applications. The microarray platform provides the flexibility to use both one and two color experimental designs. Coupled with GeneSpring GX and CGH analytics software tools, the microarray scanner is a powerful addition to our systems biology training and research programs.

Applications: Multiple Genomics applications including expression analysis, comparative genomic hybridization, splice variant analysis, and location analysis.
